Studebaker Worldwide Racing History By Bob
Coolidge
Studebaker autos were present on the speed courses of the United
States and around the world beginning with the 1903 Studebaker Model A. On
these pages you can discover and track the performance of the mighty President
Straight 8 engine at Indianapolis with Russ Snowberger and other open wheel
venues.
The establishment of NASCAR in 1949 saw Studebaker
participation lead by Ralph Zrimsek. The exciting introduction of the V8 engine
in 1951 resulted in winning pole positions, races and strong finishes by Frank
Mundy, Danny Weinberg, Gayle Warren, George Seeger , and Elmo Langley among
others.
1953 saw the redesign of the entire Studebaker
line of cars. Drivers competing in the new Loewy designed coupes and Hawks
included George Parrish, Merritt Brown, Blackie Pitt and a young A. J. Foyt,
Jr
1959 brought about the introduction of the Lark.
One of the most impressive finishes by a Lark was Harold Smith's in the first
Daytona 500. Larks won and had competitive finishes in NASCAR and SCCA
sanctioned events on road courses at Daytona, Sebring, and Lime Rock featuring
Fireball Roberts, Curtis Turner, Ralph Moody, and Lois Tyler as drivers.
As the 1960's progressed, Larks completed NASCAR
races at Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbia and Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina. Drivers for those races were Gene Stokes and Frank Sessoms.
The final appearance under a national sanctioning
body was that of Dick Passwater driving a GT Hawk in USAC stock car events in
1964 and 1965.
Results from Canada, Australia, South America, and
the Pacific are included along with regional races throughout the U. S.
Take a minute to review each of the categories,

and pictures will be added each month. Again, welcome to Studebaker
